Chapter 20: Questions to Ask Employers After the Interview
A Comprehensive Guide to Real-World Success
At the end of an interview, the hiring manager typically asks if you have any questions. This is one of the most important moments of the interview. It’s absolutely essential to ask questions because it shows that you are genuinely interested in the role, the company, and your potential future there. It also allows you to learn more about the job to ensure it’s the right fit for you. This section will cover the best questions to ask and explain why they matter.
Why Ask Questions?
Asking questions demonstrates several qualities that employers value:
- Interest and Engagement: Asking insightful questions shows that you are engaged in the conversation and genuinely interested in the role.
- Proactive Thinking: It shows that you’re thinking about the position, the company, and how you can contribute effectively.
- Evaluating Fit: It allows you to evaluate whether the company, team, and role align with your career goals and values.
It’s important to ask thoughtful, relevant questions. Generic questions such as “What does the company do?” can seem unprepared, as this information is usually available through research. Instead, focus on questions that allow you to gain deeper insight into the role and demonstrate your critical thinking.
Now, let's dive into the best questions to ask at the end of an interview.
What Problem Do You Need Me to Solve in the First 90 Days and in a Year?
This question is one of my favorites. It immediately positions you as someone who is solution-oriented and eager to contribute from day one. By asking this, you show that you are thinking strategically about your role and what’s expected of you. It also gives you a clearer picture of the challenges the company is facing and how you can help solve them.
By asking about the 90-day mark, you’re showing that you’re ready to get started right away. Asking about the one-year timeline shows that you are thinking long-term about how you can impact the company.
What Do the Top-Performing Employees Do in Their Work to Achieve Success for Your Company?
This question gives you insight into what the company values in its employees. The answers will highlight the qualities or behaviors that make employees successful. Whether it’s strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, or leadership qualities, knowing this can help you better understand what’s expected of you and whether you’re aligned with the company’s values.
It also allows you to gauge how your skills and work ethic can contribute to success in this environment.
If You Hire Me Today, How Would You Know in a Year's Time That I Was the Right Fit? (How Do You Evaluate Success?)
This is a critical question because it gives you an opportunity to understand the company’s expectations for performance and success. It allows the hiring manager to outline key performance indicators (KPIs) or milestones that would indicate whether you’re doing well in your role.
By asking this question, you also have the chance to address any potential concerns the hiring manager may have about your qualifications or fit for the role. It gives you the chance to highlight your strengths and reassure them that you can meet or exceed expectations.
What’s Life on the Job Like?
This question helps you understand the daily experience of working in the role you’re interviewing for. It provides insight into the company culture, the pace of work, and whether the job fits your working style. Is the work more collaborative or independent? Is it fast-paced, or is there time for reflection and planning?
This question also provides an opportunity for the interviewer to share details about the work environment, which could help you decide whether it’s a good fit for your lifestyle and work preferences.
What Kind of Training Do You Offer?
This question shows that you’re interested in growing and developing within the company. It lets the hiring manager know that you’re committed to continuous improvement and want to ensure you have the skills and knowledge needed to excel.
Learning about the company’s training programs also helps you understand how invested they are in employee development. It’s also essential to know whether there are opportunities for professional development to help you grow in your role over time.
How Is Feedback Provided?
Knowing how feedback is delivered can give you a clearer picture of how the company communicates with its employees. Some companies may offer regular, structured feedback sessions, while others may take a more informal approach.
This question also helps you understand the company’s approach to performance management. If feedback is given constructively and regularly, it may indicate that the company values growth and improvement.
What’s the Company Culture Like?
Company culture can make or break your job satisfaction. Asking about culture helps you assess whether the company’s values align with yours. You’ll want to know whether the company fosters a collaborative environment or if it’s more independent. Is the company values innovation, work-life balance, or community involvement?
Knowing this will help you determine whether you’ll be comfortable and happy in the work environment.
What Are the Next Steps in the Interview Process?
This is a straightforward but essential question. It shows that you are interested in moving forward and are eager to know what comes next. It also provides you with a timeline for when you can expect to hear back.
If they say the process is lengthy, you can use this as an opportunity to ask for clarification on how you can follow up appropriately.
Now that we've had a chance to discuss the opportunity and my experience. Do you have any doubt about my ability to be effective in the role?
This question is powerful because it directly addresses any concerns the hiring manager may still have. It allows you to clear up any misunderstandings or doubts they may have about your qualifications, fit, or ability to perform the job.
If there are reservations, you can use this moment to respond and provide additional examples or insights that show why you’re the right person for the job.
Technical Questions: The Practical Side
While the above questions are essential to understanding the role and the company’s expectations, it’s also important to ask practical questions about the job itself. However, these questions are often better suited for the offer negotiation phase of the hiring process, not the first interview. But, here are some technical questions you may consider asking later:
- Office/Business Hours: What are the typical working hours? Is flexibility allowed?
- Work from Home/Hybrid Option: Is there an option for remote or hybrid work?
- Design Work to Management Ratio: How much of the job is focused on design work versus management tasks?
- Team Size and Qualifications: How many people will I manage, and what are their qualifications?
- Hiring and Evaluating Personnel: Will I have the opportunity to hire and evaluate team members?
- Travel Duration and Frequency: How often will I be required to travel for work, and what’s the average duration of trips?
- Types of Projects: What types of projects will I be working on?
- Mentoring and Growth Opportunities: Are there mentoring or career growth opportunities available?
- Compensation and Benefits: What’s the compensation package, including salary, vacation, and benefits such as dental, health, and insurance?
- Overtime: What is the expected amount of overtime, and is it compensated?
Final Thoughts: Timing is Key
While these technical questions are essential, keep in mind that they are often more appropriate during the offer phase. In the first interview, your focus should remain on demonstrating your fit for the role, your interest in the company, and how you can contribute to its success.
Good luck with your interview, and remember: the questions you ask can be just as important as the answers you give.
